How to choose a lamp for a stairwell or high ceiling (2026 guide)

Lámpara de techo colgante grande Ghost Chandelier Big para hueco de escalera y doble altura

Quick answer: for a stairwell or double-height living room you need a pendant lamp with sufficient adjustable drop (so that the lamp is suspended at 2–3 m from the floor at the lowest point of the run), with a diameter proportional to the opening (approx. 1/3 of the clear width) and high luminosity (look for the total flux in lumens, not just the watts). In 5–8 m spaces you need models with drops of up to 3–5 m and TRIAC / 0–10 V / DALI dimming to adjust the scene without dark areas.

1. Measure first: the 3 data points that determine the purchase

Data point What to measure Why it matters
Clear height of the opening From the ground floor to the upper ceiling (m) Defines the drop you need. Rule of thumb: the lamp should hang down to 2–3 m from the floor at its lowest point.
Width / diameter of the opening The horizontal free space (cm) The diameter of the lamp must be proportional: not so small that it gets lost, nor so large that it hits the railing. Guideline: ~1/3 of the free width.
Use of the light Decorative, functional, or both? Determines the lumens and color temperature (2700–3000 K warm for cozy; 4000 K neutral for functional).

GASCÓN Tip: take a photo of the space with a tape measure visible and send it to us — we will tell you which models fit based on drop and diameter.

2. The drop (the most forgotten detail)

The drop is the total length from the ceiling anchor to the bottom of the lamp. It is the data point that is most ignored and the one that prevents the most returns:

  • 3–4 m ceilings (moderate double height, landings): drop of 150–250 cm.
  • 4–6 m ceilings (double-height living rooms, lobbies): drop of 250–400 cm.
  • 6–8 m ceilings or more (large stairwells, hotels): drop of 400–500 cm, usually with adjustable cable/tensioner for on-site adjustment.

Prioritize models with adjustable drop (min–max range): they allow you to adapt the final height at the time of installation, which is almost essential in irregular spaces. You can filter them in our collection of height-adjustable pendant lamps.

3. How much light you need (lumens, not watts)

With LED, watts no longer indicate the light: look at the lumens (lm). As a guide for a double-height space:

Type of space Approximate goal
Decorative stairwell 2,000–4,000 total lm
Double-height living room (main light) 4,000–8,000 lm
Lobbies / contract / high ceiling 8,000–15,000 lm

If the model supports dimming (TRIAC, 0–10 V, or DALI), you can lower the intensity to create ambiance and turn it up when you need task lighting. In high ceilings, dimming is key to avoiding glare and dark areas. Also note that height dissipates light (about 15–20% is lost per meter of ceiling), so at high heights, it is advisable to aim high regarding total flux.

4. Formats that work in height

  • Cascade / vertical linear: several staggered lights that follow the path of the staircase. The quintessential format for deep openings.
  • Large-format chandelier (multiple lights): strong decorative presence for lobbies and double-height living rooms.
  • Suspended rings / spheres: contemporary design, widely used in modern double heights — such as the 8-ring Schuller Ring.

5. Installation and safety

  • In high openings, installation usually requires scaffolding or a platform and, often, a system that allows lowering the lamp for maintenance (cleaning/source replacement).
  • If you do not have experience with electrical installations at height, hire a professional electrician: it is an intervention that is best done right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

At what height from the floor should the lamp be in a stairwell?

As a reference, 2–3 m from the floor at the lowest point of the run, so that it is visible from several floors without obstructing passage.

What drop do I need for a 5-meter ceiling?

Usually between 300 and 500 cm, preferably with an adjustable cable for on-site adjustment. At GASCÓN you have a specific collection of lamps for ceilings of 5 meters or more.

What lamp diameter do I choose for the opening?

Proportion it to the opening: around 1/3 of the free width. In a narrow opening, a vertical or cascade format is better than a very wide one.

How many lumens do I need for a double-height living room?

Between 4,000 and 8,000 lm for the main light; more if the ceiling exceeds 6 m or for contract use. With dimming you can adjust the scene.

Can I adjust the height of the lamp after installing it?

Yes, if you choose a model with an adjustable drop (minimum–maximum range). It is highly recommended in high and irregular spaces.
