Bedroom lighting: the three lights you need (and the one you don't)

Plafón de techo Trio Joko LED CCT en negro instalado en un dormitorio

GASCÓN Lighting Guide · updated in September 2026

The short answer

  • Warm light: 2,700–3,000 K. In the bedroom, this is not an aesthetic preference.
  • Three lights, not one: general lighting on the ceiling, reading light at the headboard, and a dim light for the night.
  • Dimmable, or at least with two independent circuits.
  • Reading wall lamps should be offset, never directly above your face.
  • If the ceiling is lower than 2.50 m, use a flush mount; if not, a pendant or large flush mount, as you prefer.

1. The starting mistake: a flush mount in the center and nothing else

It is the installation found in almost every home built before 2010: one light point in the middle of the ceiling. It’s fine for getting dressed or finding a sock. It’s useless for reading—the light comes from behind you and the shadow falls right over the book—or for going to bed without waking up fully.

A well-lit bedroom has three lights with three functions:

Light Purpose Where
General Getting dressed, tidying, cleaning Ceiling: flush mount or pendant
Reading Reading in bed without disturbing the other side Headboard: wall lamp with reader or table lamp
Night Getting up without turning on the ceiling light Nightstand, or floor-level marker light

You don't need to spend much: the night light can cost €20. What doesn't work is asking the same lamp to do all three things.

2. Color temperature matters more here than in any other room

2,700–3,000 K. Warm light, leaning toward amber.

The reason is practical: cool, bluish light is great at nine in the morning and a very poor companion at eleven at night, when you want to feel sleepy. The 4,000 K of the flush mount «that looked very good in the store» results in a bedroom that looks like a clinic reception area.

If you like having a choice, CCT models feature all three selectable temperatures: cool for packing a suitcase, warm for ten at night.

3. The reading light: exactly where it goes

This is where you make or break the bedroom.

Wall lamp with reader (our recommendation if you are renovating or running wiring): the center of the lamp at 1.20–1.40 m from the floor, or about 45–60 cm above the mattress. And offset outwards, aligned with the shoulder rather than the head: this way, the beam falls on the page and not on the face of the person sleeping next to you. A truly adjustable reader—articulated, not a fixed spotlight—is the difference between being able to read and not.

Table lamp (if you don't want to touch the wall): easier, but it takes up nightstand space and the light is more diffuse. Choose one with an opaque shade on top and an easily accessible switch in the dark.

LED strip under the headboard: this is ambient lighting, not for reading. It looks very nice but does not replace the above.

4. Flush mount or pendant?

Clearance height dictates, not personal taste:

  • Ceiling below 2.50 m → flush mount. A pendant in a low ceiling is visible, gets bumped, and makes the room feel smaller.
  • Ceiling 2.50 m or higher → whatever you like. A pendant over the nightstand, to the side, is a very good feature: it clears the nightstand and adds character. Hang it about 60–70 cm above the nightstand.
  • Pendant centered over the bed: only if the ceiling is high and the pendant is flat. With the bed underneath, no one stands there, so the 2.10 m rule does not apply.

6. Five mistakes we see every day

  1. Only one light on the ceiling. Lacks reading and night lighting.
  2. 4,000 K. Illuminates well but doesn't help you sleep.
  3. Reading wall lamp centered over the pillow. It blinds the person next to you.
  4. No dimmer. The same level for getting dressed and for reading at midnight.
  5. Pendant on a 2.40 m ceiling. Heads, headboards, and clothes hangers will bump into it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color temperature is best for a bedroom?

2,700–3,000 K, warm light. Avoid 4,000 K and above at night.

At what height should a reading lamp be placed above the bed?

The center at 1.20–1.40 m from the floor, or 45–60 cm above the mattress, and offset toward the shoulder so it doesn't glare.

Flush mount or pendant light in the bedroom?

Flush mount if the ceiling is below 2.50 m. Above that height, either one works.

How much light does a bedroom need?

Less than people usually install. It is more important to distribute it into three points and be able to dim it than to add up lumens on the ceiling.

Is a CCT lamp worth it?

If you are only going to install one light on the ceiling, yes: it gives you cool light for the day and warm light for the night without changing the lamp.
